Podcasting update

Hey guys with Chris leaving Deepstrike Radio, I have had to step into a much more prominent roll for the podcast. I am taking over as the "public" face and point of contact for DSR; plus I am doing a lot more of the behind the scenes content as well.

DSR is running an open casting call in search of a new third chair host. If you are interested follow this Link.

Most of you will have noticed that The Codex Project site has been down for a few weeks. I have spoken with Jeff and he plans to have it back up shortly. With a new straight shooting podcast episode to follow shortly.

I will not be doing my podcasting with my friends idea anytime soon. I need to settle into my new duties at DSR before I can even start thinking about it again.

“Plugged In” with Big Jim

I have decided to create an extremely laid back audio blog/podcast where I talk my wargaming hobby. Sometimes I will have one of my friends on with me to help cover the topic thoroughly.

Most of the time I will be covering something 40k related. With that said topics can and will cover anything wargaming from the far future, to Imperial Colonialism to gaming in the ancient world.

Each episode will be short ranging from 20 to 45 minutes at most depending on the topic at hand. If a topic would take longer to cover it will be broken up over multiple episodes.

The first episode should be up in the next couple of weeks.

Blog news and narrative gaming updates

I have started up a new Facebook page for the narrative events I run locally. I plan to talk about narrative gaming in general as well a do all the lead up work for my events and campaigns there.

If you are interested feel free to jump into the conversations on Big Jim's Narrative Gaming Productions!

Now onto the blog news:

It has been hard to maintain Galaxy in Flames as well as podcasting on 2 shows, commission paint, watch over TCP, while keeping engaged on the Custodes forum. I have become so busy in the hobby the blog has suffered, so goes life.

So the plan for the blog going forward is to put my painting and modeling here as well as battle reports. I do plan to post once a week from this point on as well, I am behind in posting pics of miniatures that I have finished in the past few months. Everything else will move to the appropriate other sites that I maintain.

So Killzone will move exclusively to TCP. Although I will post links to updates here.

Narrative gaming other than battle reports will move to FB

TCP podcast Episode 9: Setting the record straight about 6th Ed

Jeff and I have done and dusted another episode of the podcast over on TCP.

This was a blast to do, I hope you enjoy it.

Here are the release notes:

This Episode Jeff and Jim go with out notes and let the listeners basically be a fly on the wall of one of their typical conversations. They feel it is important to step up early and tell the community that despite all the negative rants about 6th Ed that they felt the need to set the record straight.

Having not completely dissected every aspect of the game start looking at the movement and shooting phases with a great deal to follow in the days ahead. As they normally do Jim and Jeff go against the flow and defend 6Th Ed as an amazing accomplishment and far and away the best version of 40K ever printed.

The two review some of the real highlights in movement and shooting that make this game so much better than its predecessors and talk about the design philosophy they feel GW’s Studio followed in its creation. Always being even handed they do point out where some problems exist but stress the very minor nature of those problems.

Also Jeff and Jim have a few words for the Tournament Organizers and how they might best embrace this amazing new version of our favorite game.

Part 2 of the 11th Company Soul Reapers Codex review

This weeks episode 65 of the 11th company has part 2 of the Soul Reapers Codex review. They cover the Troops selections of the Soul Reapers.

I want to elaborate on the 8 man squad for weapons options. It's a fluff thing, since the Soul Reapers worship chaos as a whole, the 8 man squad represents the power imbued by the Chaos star which has eight points. The Soul Reapers believe that having one marine to represent each point of the star gains them the favor and protection of the Dark gods.

Now this fluff idea ended up making for the great in game options that the guys mentioned. It was a side effect of the fluff, because at the time I wrote it I did not have game-play in my mind at all. It's strange how things work out sometimes. I had also thought about making the eight man squad the full size, but decided to leave the option for larger squads.

The review has been pretty positive, it's also nice seeing the Soul Reapers through the competitive gamers viewpoint.

Up next time they should be covering Elites and Fast Attack.

The 11th Company launch a multi part review of the Soul Reapers

This weeks episode 63 of the 11th company heralds the beginning of a new segment focused on what we are doing over at The Codex Project.

They have just started a review of the Soul Reapers fandex. Covering the Army wide special rules and Wargear of the Soul Reapers. I appreciate the honesty of the review so far, and the fact they are doing it from a competitive viewpoint.

Next time they will be looking at the Soul Reapers Psychic powers and moving into the army list in some fashion.

Talking Killzone on the Seanhammer podcast and other GiF news

I had a great time recording the latest episode of Seanhammer yesterday. This podcast is a one man show featuring Sean and his adventures in the Wargaming hobby. I've really grown to enjoy his show after AJ from the Imperial Truth introduced it to me.

We discussed my time spent in 40k over the years, lots of Killzone including the 10/10/10 Blitz on Sunday. There is even talk about upcoming projects for 40k and WFB.

Please check it out and let us know what you think.

In other news, Mags got the video battle report of our challenge game up on his blog Tabletop War. Go check it out!

Tweaks to the Soul Reapers mini-dex have begun with preliminary changes being sent off to a chosen few supporters. Expect a blog update very soon detailing these changes. There is nothing too over the top in the way of changes, I promise.

Until the next,
-Jim

The Big Jim 2010 podcast tour continues

Hey guys, I am on the newest episode of the Imperial Truth podcast. It is a unique show that brings on a pair of internet personalities and has them talk about interesting topics.

For example this episode is about the relativity of 40k fan fluff verses GW cannon fluff, and we chat about the need/addiction to FAQ's for 40k.

It was a great fun show, I am on with Geoff from the Independent Characters podcast. We had a cracking good conversation.

Please do check it out!

here is a link to the steaming feed, or you can download it from Itunes.

Until the next.

10/10/10 Killzone Revolution Day and other happenings

Hey guys I know the blog has been pretty quiet, I have been very busy behind the scenes with the development of Killzone.

I have a few bits of Killzone related news to share.

Looking ahead to a rare opportunity that comes along once a century and it being right in the middle of the first round of Killzone playtesting.

We invite you to celebrate Spec Ops Killzone with us on

10/10/2010

We will be Blitzing the Internet with Killzone Content. From Blogs to forums we will be there sharing our experiences from everything involved with Killzone.

Covering list building, modeling, painting, battle reports and maybe even a few videos.

Feel free to join in yourself, email me you posts and I will highlight them in bi-hourly updates all day on the 10th.

AJ/Bestia from the rules committee and the Imperial Truth Podcast is on this weeks episode of the Seanhammer podcast. He is talking Killzone, so please check it out!

Clarification from the Interview: A team may only have one Team Leader, he should be chosen from the models with the highest leadership stat.

Don't forget that Killzone will be at Adepticon 2011, as far as I know the first fan made 40k supplement to be run at a major US convention. Right now it is set as a Sunday event, but there is the possibility of getting a second event opened up on Friday.

Check out the initial designs for the Killzone tables that will be used in the event on B.smoove's Blog A Gentleman's Ones.

Killzone podcast interview and blog update

Hey guys, the Big Jim 2010 Podcast tour continues this week.

I am on episode 30 of the 11th Company podcast talking about Killzone. I apologize in advance for the "umm's" in my interview. The interview was done about two weeks ago, so it was early in the process, as you know I have progressed on the rules a lot since then.

If you are interested in joining rules committee and helping with Killzone as I mentioned in the interview, just let me know.

In other Blog news, today I have reached 200 followers! I would like to thank you all for the support over the last year and a half. I am happy that so many people enjoy my rambling while I promote living outside the official 40k box.

I will be doing something special for you guys in the near future!

This week there will be more Killzone Errata's and Scenarios posted up. I had a crazy week at work last week so I didn't get to post a Space Wolves or Tyranid modeling updates. This weekend I will give updates for both.

So thanks again!

Jim

Edit: as of 1 PM PST the Killzone Playtest PDF has been downloaded 160 times! Thanks for the support of the project guys!

This week in the Killzone: playtesting, more rules and Podcast mentions

First up I would like to apologize for reigning the Scenario releases in. I needed to focus on looking at the oddities in the different armies created by killzone.

This week I will start coverage of each codex and the little quirks that need changing to operate properly in Killzone games.

I will be covering things other things like unit upgrades like Chaos Icons or Wolf Standards and their effects in KIllzone too. I will also be introducing you to the counter charge mechanic for your Killzone games.

I played about 8 games of Killzone this week, it has been a blast. We keep finding little things that need addressing so the playtesting is actually working.

I went down yesterday and played some Killzone with Carl and Geoff from the Independent Characters Podcast we had a lot of fun. Again we found a few issues that need resolving.

I Talked about Killzone along with progressing as a hobbyist on their podcast. It was a blast so go check it out!

Episode 09 - When Disco was King!

Also this week the 11th Company with Neil and Pat discussed small scale 40k games, with a good discussion of Killzone. To top it off 'Cheating' Steve even talks bout a game he played with against Pat using the Killzone rules.

Episode 28: Story Games, Exaggeration, and More Gamers Lounge

I am pleasantly surprised how well this project is being received. I really want to thank you all for the continued support!

Thanks
-Jim

Gamers Lounge episode 10: tournament play, when is enough, enough?

I was listening to the 10th episode of the Gamers Lounge Podcast and they were discussing the topic; tournament play, when is enough, enough?

This has spurred me to share a story that I haven’t shared fully on the internet, because it sucks to show yourself in a bad light, but I figure if someone can benefit from my experience than it’s worthwhile.

This is the point where I changed from a super optimized tourney player back into a themed could care less if I win go to a tourney for laughs kind of guy. Around the time that my buddy got his discharge from the Marines, he came home and wanted to play a game of 40k; which I obliged to give him. I had been playing in tournaments every other weekend for two years, spanning three game systems, so had gotten used to building mean lists meant to do nothing but 'beat face'.

I had completely forgotten how to build a themed fun list, because my mind had been rewired to highly optimize everything to death. Needless to say his themed fluffy old school Orks got trampled by my highly optimized Space Wolves; in the end neither of us had any fun. Who the heck wants to crush their best friend? The look on his face was too much to bare, the last thing I wanted to do was run off my best friend from high school.

I reevaluated why I play miniature wargames, the root of that is purely for having a good time hanging out with good friends. My Pop had drilled this into me from a young age but something went wrong.

So where did I go astray? Well first off most of my family and gaming friends had stopped playing wargames for various reasons; enlisted in the Military, gotten married, had children or other real life situations that put gaming in the back seat. So I had to find a new group of guys to play with; one of the local game shops became my new second home finding a group of guys that seemed pretty fun to game with. It was a win in my book.

Little did I know that this would be the beginning of a slow spiral into rules lawyering and a I must win mentality. I must say the guys were quite convincing in discussing how to optimize a list and using the math to determine what is a good or subpar unit. I was hook and a convert to the Mathhammer cult. I did quite well in our bi-weekly tournaments, and was genuinely having a good time; scoring well in both sports and comp I really had this tourney thing down.

Then I went to the first tournament held at one of the local game cons, the guys in the group warned me not to bother going because it was a poorly run tournament. I found the tournament to be very well run, I had a great time playing my games, but I was shocked to get a poor score in both sports and comp. I thought I was a friendly opponent, and couldn’t figure out what was going on. It turned out that there was some video from the event that showed why I did poorly; I argued miniscule little rules disputes, not being a jerk or anything, but I would argue them to death instead of making my case and moving on, or calling a judge over for a ruling. Now this type of thing was totally normal at the LGS, so no one even notices these arguments.

Not wanting to come off poorly in public, I immediately changed my ways, if there was a dispute I would pull out the MRB and make my case then move on, there was no need to beat a dead horse. After that I had begun not having quite as much fun with the guys, because I really started to notice all of the bickering going on.

Eventually I moved on to a not so local game store, and began having fun again. I taught them all the little optimization tricks that I had learned from the first group, and within a few months everyone was crushing each other with great highly optimized forces. I got the shop to run tournaments every other week on the opposite schedule to the local shop.

So by the time my buddy Sean got home I was playing in tournaments every weekend. I was all about ‘bringing it’ and winning, so much so that nothing else mattered. Heck I had even stopped painting or changing my list.

If I could go back and do it all again, I wouldn’t change all the memorable times I had at the two shops playing 40k and WFB, I would change my attitude. I just wasn’t being myself, I had adapted into being one of the group so that I’d fit in better. There is nothing wrong with that in a lot of cases, but you must be careful to stay true to yourself.

Now when I walk up to the gaming table I am all about creating a situation where both my opponent and I have a good, fun time. I honestly could care less about who wins or loses as long as we both walk away from the table; feeling satisfied that we both had fun.

The moral of the story is don’t be weak of character and always stay true to yourself.

Back to the question at hand; tournament play, when is enough, enough? It’s enough when you realize that you are only participating in small part of the miniatures wargaming hobby, there is so much more involved than participating in tournaments. Neglecting things like campaigns and scenario driven play is a shame. Hanging out with good friends throwing back a couple of brews can be just as, if not more satisfying than crushing some random guy at a tournament.

BTW if you are not listening to the Gamers Lounge Podcast click the link and do so. They have a great show with hosts that bring tournament discussion to a new level. IMHO
