Eris the Seeker modeling part one: the bike

Here is the beginnings of Eris the Seeker. The bike is pretty much completed, I'll be starting work on Eris himself tomorrow.

I'd like to thank Old School Terminator for introducing me to FU 2000's nifty conversion posted on DakkaDakka. Which is where the inspiration for the weapons mount comes from.

2k of new Chaos Marine madness

Here is my first list using the new Chaos Marine codex, it is utilizing models that I currently have so it missing the new stuff.

With the Champions of Chaos rule, I have decided for me it spells the end of power fist champions. Having to issue and accept all challenges, I'd rather get my swings in. So enter the day of the Power Maul and Power Sword.

As for basic Chaos Marines, they did get cheaper if you wanna give up one leadership and your close combat weapon. I won't do that, I'll pay the 16 points per model to have +1 leadership and my CCW's, plus hatred Space marines.

With the addition of Flakk missiles to the Havoc squads I am seeing a gain in 3+ boots on the ground in my list. Which is great in my opinion!

Bikes are amazing now with a base cost of 20 points per model. Holy crap! They are my go to unit for fast attack. The mark of Nurgle is only 6 points per model; so 26 points for toughness six bikers, yes please!

I see a lot of moaning about Chosen marines, I think they are better overall than before. (again in my opinion) They lost infiltrate big whoop, they gained an attack and one point in cost, but they are still rocking Bolters, Bolt Pistols and CCW's base. That for the math challenged is 3 base attacks! I feel that Chosen will shine with a mix of special shooting weapons and specialized CC weapons; making for a very versatile unit.

Chaos Lords have become amazingly cheap, but be warned it is easy to overspend on these killy monsters! I think that the average Lord is gonna run around 150 points which is pretty good for a killy character.

Be warned, all of our generic HQ's have lost their inbuilt Invulnerable saves, you must now purchase them. Another thing of note is that only the Chaos lord and Daemon Prince are Fearless.

HQ (145pts)
Chaos Lord Sevetus
The Black Mace, Sigil of Corruption, Vet of long war, Ichor of Blood
Total: 145pts

Elite (280pts)
Chosen squad Anamayus (8)
Flamer, 2 Melta, Power Fist, Power weapon, Vets of long war
Champ with Power weapon
Rhino: dozer blade
Total: 280pts

Troops (894pts)
Marine squad Decimus (10)
2 Melta guns, x-tra CCW, Vets long war, Icon of Vengeance
Champion with Power weapon
Rhino: dozer blade, havoc launcher
Total: 282pts

Marine squad Barbarus (10)
2 Plasma guns, x-tra CCW, Vets long war, Icon of Vengeance
Champion with Power weapon
Rhino: dozer blade, havoc launcher
Total: 292pts

Marine squad Grakus (15)
2 Plasma guns, x-tra CCW, Vets long war, Icon of Vengeance
Champion with Power weapon
Total: 320pts

Fast Attack (207pts)
Bike squad Agron (6)
2 Melta guns, Vets long war, Mark of Nurgle
Champion with Power weapon
Total: 207pts

Heavy Support (470pts)
Havoc squad Ludo (10)
3 Missile launchers with Flakk missiles, 1 Lascannon
Total: 235pts

Havoc squad Mercion (10)
3 Missile launchers with Flakk missiles, 1 Lascannon
Total: 235pts

This list has 70 3+ save models, heck yeah! As my buddy Chase would say "Come at me Bro!"

Chaos Astartes are set for release soon

So the Chaos Space Marine codex did not drop in August as my sources had told me. Times are apparently really tough for rumor-mancers these days.

I have been fed tidbits of info on the CSM codex since late last year. So I had a pretty good idea that a lot of the tasty too good to be true rumors at that time were hogwash.

The latest and most accurate rumors to what I know come from Tasty Taste over on Blood of Kittens. I am glad that he has sources that are still willing to spill the beans, cause mine seem reluctant at best.

So with the post from BoK I feel ok spilling a bit of what I know to confirm some of his rumors.

Basic Chaos space marines are definitely getting a points drop, at first I heard 2 points per model, later only one point.

I had heard most units had a rule similar to preferred enemy verses space marines, now with 6th out the Hate USR fits with this.

Units would potentially get better as they destroy enemy units in assault, this was probably a vague reference to the Eye of the Gods table.

Cultists are back, but with very few options.

Oblits would gain more close combat weapons options, but this now seems to be a new unit entirely.

Defilers would get better by getting more resilient to taking damage and gaining an Invul save.

Chaos would gain a new skimmer/flyer.

Daemon Princes would get a significant price increase.

Now here are some things I heard that have not been mentioned or confirmed by Tasty's post.

Chaos Bikes would drop in points equal to the value of they loyalist brethren.

Daemon weapons would still poke you in the eye if you rolled a 1, but you would still be able to attack your enemy.

Chaos Dreads would still be crazed, but less likely to kill your own units.

Possible new Chaos Land Raider. (now this was one of the earliest rumors I got, so could have been scrapped early in the process)

I had also heard very early on that a Chaos Lord on a Bike or with a Jump pack would move similar units to the troops slot.

Now with all that said I am still very excited about the imminent release of this codex although at this point I have no idea when it will actually drop. Could be early September or sometime in October.

6th edition starter set contents

So there seems to be a leak in GW's Chinese production facility and the contents of the 6th ed starter set are out of the bag!

Thanks to spaint2k on Warseer for the translation!

The Forces of Chaos:

Tragedy strikes: the Soul Reapers have been stolen!

I spent this weekend over at my buddies house building transports and finishing up the rebasing efforts on the Soul Reapers. I built and painted 55 bases and remounted all my painted models; the army was looking schweet. I was feeling very satisfied and was looking forward to a fun photo shoot to show the Soul Reapers in all the ruined temple based glory.

I had to work the graveyard shift last night, so I packed up the Reapers and headed to work. I parked as usual in the security patrolled, gated parking lot, right next to the office door and went in for my shift. We had two operators out last night so I spent the night moving pallets instead of in the office as usual.

The crew and I headed out for breakfast/lunch at the Denny's down the road round 4AM. My van and models were intact at the time, I know this cause I shuttled 6 of us.

We ate and headed back to work around 5AM. A few of us went outside for a smoke break around 8AM only to find 6 smashed windows, including the rear window of my van. My heart sunk as I stood there in the rain dreading the inevitable result.

I lost 3 just built unpainted Rhinos, 2 converted Chaos Drop Pods, 35 Basic CSM, 10 Terminators, 6 bikes, two converted Oblits and two Dreads including my FW one. The one model lost that really kills me is the finalized conversion of Warlord Krüg from the FW lord Zufor mini. Dear lord that was a lot of hours lost for a mini I will never get to paint.

I am just at a total loss, I feel sick to my stomach. I certainly did not want to start the Soul Reapers from the ground floor again. I will rebuild it, it just won't have the same feel to the army. I already have about half of the models to replace what was lost, but it will take me a while to repurchase the rest, I just don't have the disposable income I used too.

I may take a few days off from the internet, so if you don't here from me after today for a bit don't worry I will be back.

Thanks for your time,
Jim

Big Jim's to do list.

I have finally gotten back around to finishing up my Defiler. I should have finished pics up within the next 48 hours.

I need to finish converting and photograph the other 4 Chosen Chaos Marines.

I must go have a gallon of paint mixed up for the base color of the Realm of Battle board.

Gotta go pick up some greenstuff to finish some Space Wolf conversions for a hobby update on the Space Wolves blog, this week.

I also must go through the Soul Reapers mini-dex 5.1 email feedback that has come in. Some really varied views of my little project. So expect a post with excerpts from those emails later in the week. If anyone else has any feedback feel free to send it to me.

galaxynflamesblog@gmail.com

I also have 4 more Chaos Predators that need building for the Soul Reapers Armory. Two if these will be Mauler pattern Predator conversions.

Finally I need to work on enhancing the bases of the early Soul Reapers with cork rocks. This looks to be quite intensive, but at least it's only about a third of the miniatures that need the treatment.

Cheers,
Jim

200th post, a Galaxy in Flames update of things to come

Wow, I cannot believe it's been 200 posts already. I'd like to thank all the bloggers that have supported me over the last year and a half; sticking with me through all the ups and downs. I really do appreciate it!

Looking back I am pleasantly surprised by the support I've gotten for all the Homebrew and house rules that I have posted. Plus all the great feedback and help with the Soul Reapers Chaos Space Marines Mini-dex, you guys are the best!

I'd like to thank the following blogs for being my top ten entry sites.

From the Warp
Bell of Lost Souls
Space Wolves Grey
Table Top War
Dark Future Gaming
Strictly Average
Warhammer Blood Angels
Heresy Workshop
A Gentleman's Ones
The Glorious Works

Going forward, you can expect to see more painting and modeling as I gear up for the final push on the Soul Reapers Chaos Space Marines mini-dex project. I've also got lots more house rule and homebrew in the pipeline.

Speaking of the Soul Reapers Chaos Space Marines mini-dex, the 5.1 playtest edition will be up next week. It will be the final version of the playtest rules, that has new units added to it; the units are now set and balancing must begin. This time it's got much better formatting and plenty of background to help you better understand the Warband. I have probably put in over a hundred hours into this version to make it much more presentable and Codex like.

I have the first ever Galaxy in Flames contest in the works, so keep your eyes peeled.

I will keep alerting you guys of any great new 40k podcasts I find; speaking of that.

I'd like to introduce you guys to The Independent Characters Podcast. They are a new show that I have found extremely entertaining. They are out of San Jose California, so they are pretty close to the GiF Man-cave. Check them out; if you like them and decide to join their forum let 'em know I sent you!

So I'd like to thank everyone again for all the great support over the last year and a half. Here's hoping y'all will still be engaged by my ramblings over the next two hundred posts!

Cheers,
Big Jim

The Soul Reapers army points total

The desk after the Soul Reapers were removed, imagine twice as many minis.

So I am in the middle of cleaning up the Man-cave, and darn is it messy. I have found a few boxes of 40k stuff I forgot I had bought. First up was an unopened Chaos Battleforce, then I found a second Chaos Land Raider (to be made into the Warlords personal ride!); all that I can think of saying is Score!

So I decided to take a break and add up how many points in Soul Reapers models I have; according to the mini-dex. This list is minus the HQ's and HQ linked units.

Elites 690 points

5 Terminators 200
4 combi-melta, heavy flamer, Chainfist, Personal Icon

5 Terminators 220
4 combi-plasma, Reaper AC, Power Fist, Personal Icon

6 Possessed 270

Troops 1843 points

10 Soul Reapers Marines 285
2 melta guns, champ with fist, Icon of Perpetual War
Rhino, extra armor

10 Soul Reapers Marines 285
2 melta guns, champ with fist, Icon of Perpetual War

8 Soul Reapers Marines 263

Onslaught Dread 180
Chainfist and plasma gun upgrades
Drop Pod

Heavy Support 1200 points

Defiler 150

Defiler 150

Predator 100
AC turret, HB sponsons

Predator 130
AC turret, LC sponsons

Predator Mauler 130

Land Raider 240
Possession

5583 total points

Holy cow, fifty five hundred points of Soul Reapers without a single HQ; I imagine that if the HQ's were added it would easily be tipping the seven K mark. I had no idea I had this many Chaos Marine models for the army!

The sad part is that only about a quarter are painted. I've got a lot of work ahead of me! It is crazy how you don't realize how many models you have when you collect and army over time.

The Soul Reapers Mini-dex Version 5

* Soul Reapers Marine Squad
* Soul Reapers Biker Squad

The true power has arrived!: Xusia the Master of Malevolence

Here he is in all his painted glory! I am quite happy with how well he turned out. This was my first attempt at doing lightning on a force/power weapon, I think it turned out ok.

I will be updating the entry for Xusia tomorrow for inclusion in this weekends update of the Playtest mini-dex.

Oh yeah, I don't want to forget to give a shout out to Corvus and his fantastic blog. He provided me with the nifty new background image I used here. I'd also like the thank Dverning for introducing me to corvus' blog!

For those that are interested here is a list of where I got the parts for the conversion.

His lower body was from limited ed DA vet, the chest from the Zerker box, R arm from CSM box, R hand SW box, L arm SW box, L gauntlet from CSM, L hand from Marine Termy Libby. Antlers for the helmet and the staff haft Chaos Lord box. The staff mace head comes from LoTR Sauron. L handed holster and shoulder pad chaos bikes squad box. Grenade and pouch Catachan box

These are the parts that are from WH fantasy: the skull helmet minus the antlers, hanging skulls on the pack and the scroll on his waist. The helm is from the chaos warrior box and the scroll/hanging skulls are from the Empire flagellants.

Something wicked this way comes

Xusia the Master of Malevolence is about to finally make his fully painted debut here on Galaxy in Flames. It has taken me two months of tinkering with different ideas and techniques to get him done. I have also had multiple emails asking what happened to him. Rest assured the wait is almost over.

Xusia will be posted up in all his finished glory within the next 24 hours. So keep your eyes on GIF, for this wicked madman is about to take over!

For those that have not seen or do not remember the model here is the unpainted front shot.

Thanks for all the support for the Soul Reapers project, I appreciate it!

Reporting in from the Road: Rhino painting

Hey guys I thought I drop in and show you what I have been working on. Like I said in my previous post I need to get all of the Rhinos for the Soul Reapers finished. I really didn't like how the tarnished bronze was turning out with the drybrush techniques I was using; so I busted out the old airbrush and started over again.

This time I decided to attempt to get the tarnished bronze effect with the airbrush. I must say I am quite pleased with this first Rhino, so much so that I will be painting all the rest of the tanks using this technique. Since I had decided to start off fresh I made the decision to let a little of Menzies art grace the hulls of the Soul Reapers Rhinos. It's a case of reality mimicking art, thanks again Dude!

I think it turned out great, although it is a little off center.

It can be seen here in its art form:

Here is the rest of the Rhino, showing the tarnishing effect I was talking about.

What do you guys think I should I put on the other side of the front plate on the Rhino; a Chaos star or Skull?

Here's a sneak peak at the Reaver Champion, I will show the whole squad soon, as I am having trouble with my conversion for the demo pack.

I started painting the Harbinger of Malice today, and I am finally finishing up the last details on Xusia the Sorcerer. So expect an update soon.

Making better rules for Chaos Possessed Marines

I'm taking another look at this unit and trying to improve it, as with everything to do with my dedication to my mini-dex project I'm putting a lot of thought into this.

The models are just too nice to use only as filler parts for Asp. Champs. So I am going to do a complete re-write for them in the Soul Reapers mini-dex.

I do have a few ideas which I will share a little later, but I thought I'd get some ideas from the 40K Bloggosphere on the issue.

So if Possessed were re-written what would you like to see in the rules?

The loss of random gifts, and the return of actual pointed upgrades?

How mutable should they be? One or multiple upgrades per squad?

The floor is yours!

Harbinger of Malice (twisted Chaos Apothecary) modeling completed

I am moving forward in my modeling for the Soul Reapers. Here is the first finished Harbinger of Malice.

He turned out so much better than I imagined he would. I'm thinking bout making his skull helmet red, to make him stand out from the other skull helmets in the army.

I should have the first modeled Reaver squad up tomorrow. I only have two left to build including the Demo-charge wielding maniac!

I finally picked up an assault bike to build the Infernal Assault bike. My original conversion just was not pleasing in my eyes.

I am also working on the Reavers Siege Rhino, which I need a name for. I'd like something that falls in line with the current naming standard Rhino and Razorback sound great. So maybe a creature from mythology would work.Does anyone have any good suggestions for a fitting name?

Also, if anyone hasn't seen it I updated and posted the Reavers background entry on the Ehdan blog. So head on over and let me know what you think?

Terminator Squad Crixis and a tourney challenge list

Here is my converted Combi-plasma Terminator squad; as with all the rest of my Chaos Marines the horns had to go. So I decided to go with a Grey Knight style conversion.

I have been issued a challenge by a few of the local gamers to take an unmarked Chaos Marine force to a tourney. I walked in on a discussion about the uselessness of the non-cult choices from the codex CSM in the competitive scene. While I agree a non-cult army is not optimized toward winning, they can be competitive if run correctly.

So here is the 2000 point list I came up with. It is kind of an all or nothing list, it will probably win big or lose big. The walking terminators relying on DS is a big gamble, but it can be mitigated with the icons; the bikes can also help get them in a good location.

HQ
Chaos Lord 150
Bike, combi-melta, power weapon, melta bomb

Daemon Prince 130
Wings

Elites
4 Terminators with 3 combi-melta, Reaper AC, Chainfist, Icon of chaos glory
185

4 Terminators with 3 combi-plasma, Heavy Flamer, powerfist, Icon of chaos glory
160

Troops
10 Chaos Space Marines with 2 melta guns and icon of chaos glory
Aspiring Champion with power fist
Rhino, extra armor
270

10 Chaos Space Marines with 2 melta guns and icon of chaos glory
Aspiring Champion with power fist
Rhino, extra armor
270

10 Chaos Space Marines with 1 Plasma gun, Lascannon and icon of chaos glory
Aspiring Champion with power weapon and combi-plasma
Rhino, extra armor
285

Fast attack
6 Chaos Bikers with 2 meltaguns and icon of chaos glory
Aspiring Champion with power fist
268

Heavy Support
2 Obliterators
150

Predator
LC sponsons
130

To pod or not to pod?!?

The topic of adding drop pods to the Soul Reapers has been brought up many times. Most recently by Magilla Gurilla and Derina, while I agree with the sentiment, I have never really tackled the concept.

There are many things in 40k that baffle the mind when it comes to the differences in wargear between Chaos and Imperial Space Marines. Currently it seems that the second a Space Marine turns traitor he forgets how to maintain his wargear; so he discards drop pods, land speeders, storm bolters, landraider variants and the list goes on. Lets not forget he forgets basic doctrines like combat squads and tactics; plus he forgets that he knows no fear.

I understand that GW are trying to make both armies different, but there comes a time where the suspension of disbelief doesn't quite cut it any more. Especially with the current regurgitation that is the Chaos Space Marine codex, that swaps the focus to more recent renegades over the original traitor legions.

So my original choice was to forgo this issue in an effort to no be overly ambitious. I am now at a point where everything else in the mini-dex seems pretty well balanced and maybe trying something ambitious is needed.

There are a couple of ways I could add drop pods to the Soul Reapers; I could add a special Planetary Assault rule, that would force all units to deploy by drop pod or deep strike forgoing any sort of tanks in the army. Or I could just add them as a transport option just like in the codex SM.

Then I have to decide if I want to use the FW IA rules for the Dreadclaw or just use the SM rules for a drop pod. I am leaning toward the latter option as the FW IA rules seem a bit clunky in game terms.

So what do you guys think?

More thoughts on adding a few more options tomorrow.

Xusia modeling completed

I cannot wait to get him painted!

Aspiring Champion of Chaos

I've finally got my painting groove back! Sometimes it's funny the models that inspire you when you are in a painting rut. I've really been trying hard to get some painting done on my character minis for my Reapers and Wolves, but just wasn't making any real headway.

Then I was sitting here yesterday and this Aspiring Champ model just started screaming at me to be painted. Who am I to argue with the powers of Chaos!?!

Well as you can see he is painted and I am working on the other three Aspiring Champs I had sitting next to him.

Soul Reapers project update 1/17/10

While I am finishing up my Wargaming through the year’s retrospective, I figured I’d give a quick update on decisions made about the Soul Reapers Mini-dex project.

First up is that ‘We’ as in my gaming group has decided that I should not put up the final product until after the Blood Angels codex is released. This is so we can make sure that the points of the Soul Reapers are appropriate. So this puts the finalized Mini-dex up in early May.

Right now we are not charging for the Fear is for the Weak special rule, but when I do the January update this coming week we will be adding one point increase per model in the army that gets access to the rule. This is relenting to feedback from codex Marine opponents.

Second up on the plate, we will be replacing the Sorcerer entry in the Codex CSM with an Apostle of Malevolence entry with a few new powers and options.

Thirdly, Xusia will be getting a couple of slight tweaks.

The fourth item in the hopper is the return of the 3.5 Chart for Chaos Dread Crazed results.

Fifth, Zombies go to an Apocalypse Data sheet and Heretics/Cultists make a return to the project.
